Green motoring: What are we willing to change to reduce emissions?

26 Feb 2011
by Donald MacKenzie

Well, according to a recent ONS survey, most motorists are willing to change their driving behaviour and transport choices with a view to reducing their carbon footprint.

Eighty-five per cent of us are looking to buy cars with lower CO2 emissions next time around and 72% say that they are willing to change their behaviour to limit climate change.

Here's the full breakdown, in terms of the issues investigated by the study:

It's not possible to disentangle the contribution of other factors that could be determining some of these choices, notably the desire to reduce motoring costs, but that almost three-quarters state a willingness to make changes to reduce carbon emissions is encouraging.

However, the psychology of behavioural change is complex. To state willingness to do something different (perhaps simply because it seems like a good idea when you're asked about it in a survey), in practice, very often does not result in any actual change in behaviour.

Nonetheless, it is encouraging that so many are concerned about their own environmental impact and appear willing to accept personal responsibility for acting differently to reduce their carbon emissions.

Consistent with the above comments, while almost a quarter expressed a willingness to fly less, how many of these respondents simply meant that they can't afford so many holidays as before? Further, if presented with a cheap charter flight or a day's coach travel, how many would opt for the lower carbon choice in practice?

Usefully, however, this research does seem to suggest that government measures to pursue greener motoring policies will have the support of the public, as long as any legislative changes do not hit the motorist hard in the wallet.

However, this research does not seem to show this, as we review in our next blog
Green motoring: Which government interventions would we support?.
