NHS told to stop advertising
injury lawyers
20 Jan 2012
Health Minister, Simon Burns, will be writing to NHS chief executive,
Sir David Nicholson, to demand that NHS trusts stop distributing
leaflets on casualty wards that promote 'no win, no fee' personal
injury lawyers.
According to a report in 'the Times', many NHS trusts distribute advice
leaflets which are subsidised by advertising from personal injury firms.
Burns comments “Patients should be able to focus on getting better
without having to be hounded by lawyers or adverts displayed in A&E
departments. I will ask Sir David Nicholson to write to hospitals to
remind them that it is not acceptable to display these adverts.”
The Minister's intervention comes after Andrew Bridgen, the Tory MP for
North West Leicestershire, put down a parliamentary early day motion
highlighting and criticising the deals, which he claims have fuelled
the rise of Britain’s compensation culture that pushes up the cost of car insurance
for everyone.
At present the MoJ is considering what more needs to be done to curtail
case-generating practices by the claims industry. They have already
started clamping down more firmly on the practices of claims management
companies, while the recent Transport
Select Committee report on the cost of motor insurance too a
similar stand "We also call on the Government to initiate an
investigation of cold calling intended to generate personal injury
claims, with a view to examining the legal and regulatory options for
curtailing this activity."
