Tesco Cars @ TescoCars.com - Review

4 April 2011
by Donald MacKenzie

Tesco's online venture into used car sales kicked off two days ago when the Tesco Cars website, Tescocars.com, went live. The background to this new service from the supemarket giant is presented in our blog: Tesco to hook up with Motability to sell second-hand cars online.

A look through the cars presented for sale by the Tesco Cars website did not reveal any especially impressive bargain prices when compared to those cars currently available through Autotrader. (We used a 2008, 10,000 miles, Ford Focus 1.6 litre Climate Control, petrol hatchback as our 'test' model). But prices were definitely competitive, often beating prices typical of those that you might pay through a dealer.

Tesco Cars does not offer a trade-in service for your old car, however. This might limit its uptake as dealers will often offer over the 'book price' for your old vehicle to close a deal; so, in effect, giving you a discount on the 'windscreen' price of the car that they are selling you.

Of course, Tesco Cars removes the second hand car salesman from the process of buying a used car and, for many, this will be a strength. They also deliver the car to your door from anywhere in the country. A full RAC used car report is provided for each car, given that the Tesco Cars model does not allow for a test drive before purchase.

The Tesco Cars site certainly makes it quick and easy to find a 'bog standard' family car, competitively priced, with an RAC report for buying confidence. The sale can be handled entirely online with the car being delivered to your door. There's no need for the potential
inconvenience or stress of negotiating with a dealership. It is likely that this will prove a winning formula for many, although the lack of a trade-in facility for your old car could limit uptake.

Once you have your new car whether from Tesco Cars or not, you'll find a full range of
car insurance services on this site that are more than likely to save you money on your cover. The most popular resources are shown below.
