Car Insurance Buyers Checklist
When you're buying car insurance,
it's wise to have a checklist of the kinds of policy features that you
will want to consider in determining the right policy choice for your
own unique circumstances.
Your car insurance buyers' checklist might usefully include some or all
of the following questions:
- Is breakdown cover included?
- Is there a courtesy car? If so, for how long? Do
I have to pay for its insurance?
- Is legal expenses cover included?
- What's the size of the excess (compulsary plus
voluntary)?
- Do I use my car for social purposes only, or for
commuting or business driving?
- Is lock replacement / loss of key included?
- Is overnight accommodation included if I'm away
from home and stranded due to an accident or my car is stolen?
- Can I protect the no claims discount? How many
claims before this protection is lost?
- Am I covered (third party) if I drive someone
else's car?
- Am I covered if I drive in other European
countries? What type of cover is it? And for how long?
- How much are mid-policy changes, for instance if
I buy a new car?
- Must I use an insurance-approved garage? If I
can use my own garage, will this effect the courtesy car?
- Will I pay more if I pay monthly?
- What's the windscreen repair excess? Is the
number of windscreen replacments restricted and will it effect the no
claims discount?
- Can I transfer a no claims discount onto a
second car?
- What about importing a no claims discount acrued
while driving as a second driver on another car insurance policy?
You won't find all of these on a single car insurance
policy but they do represent the kinds of issues to consider when
buying your car insurance cover.
