Churchill Insurance was launched by Martin Long in June 1989. Their
first product was Churchill car insurance, with home insurance not
being introduced until the following year. It's where Henry Engelhardt
started off before he went on to found Admiral.
The famous Churchill bulldog was added to the brand in 1994 and went on
to feature as their nodding dog in commercials two years later.
Churchill acquired the Devitt, NIG and Prudential insurance brands and
was itself bought by RBS Insurance in 2003 for £1.1bn paid to
Credit Suisse that had backed the launch of Churchill through their
(then) subsiduary, Winterhur.
This brought them into the same stable as Direct Line which Churchill
founder, Martin Long, had also had a hand in founding.
As part of the strategic re-organisation of the RBS, their Insurance
group is to be sold off in 2012; so the multiple award winning
Churchill brand is set for a further change of owenrship.
