Could your driving licence be about to expire?

16 Jan 2012

Many motorists will be oblivious to the fact that their photo card driving licence may have or is about to expire, given that it is only valid for ten years from issue. Drivers with an expired driving licence risk a £1,000 fine under Section 99 (5) of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Sainsbury's Bank car insurance has looked into this issue and reports that 1.6 million drivers' photographs have expired on their driving licence already and a further 3 million must be renewed by the end of 2012.

Over the next five years, almost 13 million drivers will need to renew their photograph, even if they don't currently drive.

Based on a survey of 2004 UK adults conducted by ICM research on behalf of Sainsbury’s Finance in November 2011, 41% of motorists didn't know the true consequences of having an expired photograph on their driving licence.

Sainsbury's found that fewer than one in three (30% or 487,000) of those drivers with an expired licence were aware that their licence had expired. A further 10 million people did not know when their driving licence was due to expire and 14% (234,984) of expired photo card licences had been out of date since 2009 or before.

For those that have overlooked renewing their driving licence, an expired driving license does not invalidate your motor insurance and there are no additional penalties such as points on your licence.

To check your own driving licence, its expiry date is listed to the right of the code '4b' on the front of your driving licence. If it has or is about to expire, you can renew it online.

To renew the photo on your driving licence online you need to:
  • have a valid UK passport issued within the last five years
  • be a resident of Great Britain
  • pay a fee (currently £20.00) by MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card
  • not currently be prevented from driving for any reason
  • provide addresses of where you have lived over the last three years
  • have your driving licence (if you do not have your driving licence you must indicate why as part of your application)
You can renew your driving license photo online via this 'Directgov' page:
