Car Insurance: Which car?
10 Mar 2011
This is the first in our 'Which
Car Insurance'
articles series, intended to guide drivers through the process of
buying car
insurance
online, every step of the way. The other titles in the series are
listed at the bottom of this article.
These articles compliment other sections on this site, including our buyers' guide, another resource for those
wanting to get cheap car insurance online.
Here, we look at the choice of car - which car you buy in the first
place - from the perspective of the impact of that choice on car
insurance.
It is now compulsary for car insurance providers to take account of the
1-50 Thatcham rating system. This replaced the old 1-20 system in Jan
2010. You can check your own car's ABI / Thatcham rating here: ABI
Group Rating.
Clearly, which car you buy has a major impact on the cost of car
insurance, especially for the young driver. Those aged 25 or under can
save many thousands of pounds by buying a low car insurance group car.
Indeed, we suggest that the young driver should buy one of the
following cars, unless they have a good reason not to do so, as they
are the ten cheapest cars to insure in the UK:
1. Citroen C1
2. Toyota Aygo or C1
3. Peugeot 107
4. Vauxhall Corsa
5. Ford Fiesta
6. Chevrolet Matiz
7. VW Fox
8. Fiat Grande Punto
9. Nissan Micra
10. Skoda Fabia
In view of the ever-increasing cost of motoring, most drivers now say
that they intend to buy a smaller car next time; so, if any of the
above are an acceptable choice, they will save you money on car
insurance as well as fuel.
