Update
& Review of Motor
Insurance
In this motor insurance
review, we review the best resources currently available online that,
when used prudently, can assist motorists to secure the best car insurance
cover at the cheapest possible prices.
In fact, the simplest fast-track solution is to review the links to the
right of this article and buy motor insurance via one of them as we
only retain motor insurance comparison sites and direct motor insurance
providers here that are popular with our site visitors in terms of
numbers of policies bought through these links (at zero cost to the
consumer).
On the other hand, if you are interested in a more detailed motor
insurance review, then the following may be of interest.
The first point to make is that while there are understandable reasons
for it, we perhaps over-use, and certainly misuse, motor insurance
comparison sites in this country. It's not a good idea, and we tend
not, to select out the cheapest TV, the cheapest pair of shoes or the
cheapest home but when it comes to a review of motor insurance, the
wisdom behind the principle that you pay for what you get deserts many
of us as we can't wait to sign up for the cheapest motor insurance
around.
Many are aware that they are, effectively, gambling on not needing to
claim on their motor insurance when they buy very cheap. Others are
simply unaware of their poor choice until they have to claim, largely
because they did not review the policy at the start.
Clearly, a very cheap policy passes a significant proportion of the
cost of a claim back to the consumer and, as a result, does not serve
the policy-holder well in an accident. This is partly, but not just,
because the excess is generally high.
The top price comparison sites do allow for some comparison of the
motor insurance policy features as well as their prices and consumers
should make full use of this facility having, in advance, a reasonable
idea of which policy features are required.
A point that is often overlooked is that leading direct motor insurance
providers (listed to the right) do not and cannot command a large
market share without offering highly competitive pricing. Price
comparison sites prosper on the basis that consumers disregard the fact
that this competitive pricing is not absolute but relative.
Relative to the pricing of rival companies for similar motor insurance policies,
they are indeed competitive. But relative to the highly 'no frills'
policies that top the price comparison charts, they are likely to be
more costly. This does not mean that they are bad value for what you
are getting and, when you look at what is offered as standard (as you
can do via the links below) it is really quite surprising that
relatively few people nowadays opt to go direct to a major motor
insurance provider to buy their car insurance.
Unless you are expecting costly cover, as, for example, when you have
no no claims discount or you are under 25, we would suggest a review of
a direct motor insurance provider first before considering use of a
price comparison site.
The choice of motor insurance should be determined by what represents
the best cover at reasonable cost, rather than by what's the absolute
cheapest policy to buy.
