Co-op 'Smartbox' (for under-25s) Review | 'General' Co-op car insurance review:

Please note that this is our Co-op car insurance review. If you want to review current Co-op car insurance policy features, please use our 'Coop Car Insurance' link above.

The Co-operative Insurance Company, previously known as the Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS), was founded in 1867. It was first formed to provide fire insurance for Co-op Societies and, as this review outlines, it has come a long way since that time.

The Co-operative Financial Services (CFS) group was formed as a holding company for both the then Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) and the Co-operative Bank in 2002. Their banking operation included Smile, the UK's first full internet bank.

A review of the strength and public awareness of the Co-op brand led to the Co-operative Group bringing all of its operations under the same well-known and easily recognisable Co-operative brand. The CIS was therefore renamed as The Co-operative Insurance from April 2008.

The Co-op car insurance head office is in Miller Street in the centre of Manchester, a well-known landmark building which, when it was built in 1962, was the tallest building in the whole of Europe, rising to 387 feet. Since 2006, though, the Beetham Tower has been Manchester's tallest building.

As a major insurer, the Co-op insurance, that includes its car insurance operation, has a turnover of £3.5bn.

The Co-op brand and it members have a distinct philosophy and culture. The Co‑op is run not to maximise profits for their shareholders, but to provide value to all their members at local level. Because they invest in local communities, this gives them their unique character and effects their priorities which, historically, have included football sponsorship.

The above Coop car insurance review, although believed to be correct, does not take account of any changes that may have occured since the review was written.
