The cheapest car insurance - what's the big deal?
There is no doubt that
everyone likes to save money where they can. No surprise then that
services that make it easy to find the cheapest
car insurance prices are going to be popular, and they certainly
are - price comparison sites are very popular.
But - and this is not a complicated point - the only thing that makes
the cheapest car insurance stand out is its price. Any car insurance
policy that's cheaper than hundreds, even thousands, of its rivals is
not going to be the most impressive of policies in terms of the cover
it offers and, when you apply an objective assessment at what you are
getting, it, very often, is better left on the shelf.
That so many people buy the cheapest car insurance via a price
comparison site without stopping to consider this obvious point is
surprising but the desire to save money should not be to the exclusion
of everything else, especially an objective assessment of the
associated cover that the policy provides.
You do need to ask yourself what you see as essential to have in your
policy and if the cheapest car insurance doesn't meet those
requirements, don't buy it. You may find that the policy you finally
buy is ten, twenty or more pounds more than the lowest price, but it is
only sensible to choose the right policy for your needs.
Here, we actually see the appropriate use of price comparison sites to
be for a much more restricted group then simply for routine use by
everyone. They are best reserved for those drivers that will face high
car insurance costs, where compromising on cover is justified by the
otherwise high cost of that cover.
These categories include young drivers, those without a no claims
discount, those with previous driving convictions, and those living in
a high (insurance) risk area - that is where insurance premiums reflect
a high incidence of car crime in that area.
For reasons of quality control we otherwise advise drivers to go direct
to leading car
insurers (as listed below) to be sure of getting good cover as
standard every time. Motor Insurance should not be bought on the basis
of finding the absolute cheapest car insurance around, it should be
bought on the basis of what you consider essential should you need to
claim on it.
Whatever course you choose, do take care. The cheapest car insurance
often brings later problems if you are in fact involved in an accident.
