How easy is it to get the right car insurance online to
meet your needs?
Well, not as easy as you may
imagine. There are numeorus providers of car
insurance online, but how do you know which to use to best meet
your own needs?
To some extent, of course, this depends on your requirements. A
family's second car, for example, may not need as eleborate cover as
their primary car. The young driver has different needs to, for
instance, a woman driver, and so on.
We will start with an overview of the general considerations to bear in
mind when you buy motor insurance. There are basically two ways to get
car insurance online. You can either compare
car insurance using a price comparison service or you can go direct
to car
insurers and buy from them.
Under which circumstances might you select the latter option and go
direct instead of comparing numerous prices via a price comparison
service? In fact, there are several reasons why you may choose direct
car insurance. These include where you are in a specific category
for which direct insurers provide discounted and tailored services, as
is the case for female
drivers, young
drivers, multi-car
owners and older
car owners; where you are looking for specific policy features or a
better quality of cover as 'standard'; where you are interested in
current promotions or deals offered by direct insurers; or where you
wish to insure with a quality brand such as M&S or Direct Line
(links below).
When, then, is a price comparison site the best choice for car insurance
online? Well, because we would see obtaining an insurance
product of reasonable quality to be important - as you should always
purchase car insurance with a worst possible accident / personal
injury scenario in mind - then we would recommend restricting your use
of price comparison sites, given that their focus is on finding the
cheapest cover.
Restricting your use of price comparison sites to any situation where a
high insurance price is to be expected and where a more pragmatic
approach to the level of cover included in the policy becomes necessary
to avoid exessive costs, we would suggest, is the more prudent context
for their use. Thus, we can recommend them for anyone with no no claims
bonus, for drivers with previous driving convictions or penalties, for
young drivers or for those resident in particualry high risk
neighbourhoods. Although a high premium can be expected for performance
car insurance, we do not recommend using a price comparison site
for this category for reasons of quality control, as outlined above.
