Third Party Motor Insurance from the Car Insurance
UK Supermarket
Third
party
motor insurance can be a slightly cheaper option than comprehensive
cover which is sometimes attractive to the owner of an older car,
particularly where that car has little value. Clearly where your car is
worth less than your excess, you won't get any compensation for it from
your insurer if it is written off. Is this sufficient reason to take
out third
party
motor insurance instead of fully comprehensive cover for a low value
car?
No. While third
party
motor insurance also covers you where your vehicle is involved in a
fire (eg. from an electrical fault) or it
is stolen, these are still not sufficient reasons to accept third
party
motor insurance only. That is because any longterm loss of earnings due
to any injuries you sustain is not covered and nor are those of any of
your passangers.
Clearly, if you were not at fault for the accident, then you should be
able to settle these costs with the other party's insurer but where
that party is one of over a million in this country that are uninsured,
or you were responsible for the accident yourself, you wouldn't be able
to do so and therefore you would be vulnerable to this risk if you
choose third
party
motor insurance only even where you are not responsible for the
accident.
Third
party
motor insurance is only available direct from a motor insurance
company. You can't get it via a price comparison system. As a result,
you can often get a fully comprehensive policy for less than a third
party
motor insurance policy that you obtained direct if you choose to
compare car insurance
through a price comparison site.
As third
party
motor insurance
cover is usually fairly close in price to a fully comprehensive policy,
it does beg the question whether considering it at all in the first
place is wise, in the light of the above risks.
Generally, in fact, we tend to advise our site users to go direct to
quality insurers as there are certain risks to going for very budget
car insurance every time, risks we explore in other articles on this
site.
If there is ever a situation where third
party
motor insurance is justified, which we would dispute, it would be in
the case of the low value car that is used infrequently in a more rural
location.
As outlined above, third
party
motor insurance cover
can usually be undercut in price with a fully comprehensive policy
anyway; so why take the risk?
