Line Car Insurance Review

Direct Line is part of the RBS Insurance division. That division is due
to be sold off in 2012 as part of the RBS Group strategic review
intended to reduce the group's risk exposure. The sell off is
regulator-driven and follows the RBS public bail out after the global
banking crisis.
Launched in 1985, as
the brainchild of Peter Wood, Direct Line was the
first ever telephone insurance provider in this country. Owing to the
slashing of their overheads via this, at the time, novel service
delivery model, they were able to provide cut-price rates, and Direct
Line rapidly became the UK's largest car insurance provider.
Direct Line continues to command a sizeable share of the car insurance
market to this day having made a laudable, if brave, decision to trade
on quality as well as price and to not work with price comparison sites
as a result, despite their popularity.
Like other insurers, Direct LIne took a hit as a result of
ever-increasing personal injury claims but they have recently been back
in the black and are well-placed for the pending RBS Insurance
sell-off.
The Direct LIne head office is in Croydon, but they also operate from Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester and
Glasgow. Thier
international operation includes Spain, Germany, Italy and
also
Japan.
In the fiercely competitive car insurance market amid hostile operating
conditons given ever-increasing underwriting costs, Direct Line has
invested heavily in TV advertising which has heped them to maintain
their market share although they have lost out slightly to other
providers, notably Admiral that has a more cost-effective underwriting
model. Direct LIne, nonetheless, continues to offer a competitive deal,
marketed as quality on a budget.
The above Direct Line car insurance review, although believed to be
correct, does not take account of any changes that may have occured
since the review was written.
