Endsleigh Insurance is based in Cheltenham. The insurance broker
specialises in student and graduate cover. Conceived by Nottingham
University graduate Mike Naylor, Endsleigh Insurance was founded by the
National Union of Students (NUS) in 1965. In 1976 the NUS sold an 86%
share to Gouda Insurance International which was bought back in a
management buyout in 2002, followed rapidly by Endsleigh being bought
in its entirety by the Zurich Insurance Group.
In the early 2000s, Endsleigh thrived. They were quoted by the Sunday
Times as the 76th fastest growing company in the UK at 52% a year.
However, as they insure a lot of young drivers, they were hit harder
than many rivals by the cost of underwriting ever-increasing injury
claims in car insurance and a drastic reduction in their operational
costs was needed. In a radical shake-up in 2008, Endsleigh closed its
119 local branches to instead operate from three centres: the Chetenham
HQ, Burnley and Belfast.
Endsleigh continues to provide a car insurance brokerage service to
young drivers and remains the NUS recommended insurance provider.
