Based in Newport, Wales, Gocompare was founded in 2006 by Hayley
Parsons, who had previously worked at rival price comparison site
Confused.com as head of business development.
Exploiting a fundamental flaw in how insurance comparison results were
presented, Gocompare was the first to present policy features
information in addition to prices.
In less than hree years after they were founded, Gcompare included more
than a hundred car insurance providers on their panel of insurers, more
than any other comparison site at the time.
The rapid growth of Gocompare has been impressive. Gocompare almost
tripled its pre-tax profits for 2010 compared to the previous year. In
2009, their profit was £10.1m but in 2010 it soared to
£30.1m.
This success had much to do with their prominent TV advertising
campaign that featured the infamous tenor, Gio Compario. The campaign
cost Gocompare £2 for every car insurance policy bought through
their quote system, a not atypical cost for promotional activities in
the competitive car insurance market.
Gocompare employs only 94 people and is now one of the top four price
comparison sites in the country.
Parsons is not anticipating continued growth at the level recently seen
given the highly competitive nature of the UK car insurance market and
that there will be less potential new customers for Gocompare, given
that most have already switched to use price comparison sites to find
their car insurance.
