Female car insurance - what's the deal?
Note:
As of 21 Dec 2012, gender cannot contribute to premium calculations.
If you
want to buy women's car insurance right now, we would
recommend going to our article on women's
car insurance in our
'Buyers Guide' section that offers
the most useful advice on this.
Just under half of those
needing to renew their car insurance are women drivers. This is a huge
market for UK motor insurance companies to target specifically and
several do, with some sucess. But, is this all just marketing hype or
is there something to be said for choosing a female
car insurance specialist?
Well, as you'd expect, female car insurance policies are tailored to
the needs of women. This can include enhanced safety in terms of
call-out times when broken down and various other features such as more
impressive cover where belongings are stolen from the vehicle.
As these female car insurance products, generally speaking, offer
enhanced cover rather than a down-graded product (designed to score
highly on price comparison sites), they typically don't compete
favourably on price alone. However, when taking account of the cover
provided, the market-leaders can be seen as, and are, competitive.
So how does this tailored female car insurance
fit into the bigger
picture, that is, all the potential car insurance products that women
may choose to select? Well, not as prominently, arguably, as they
deserve.
In the UK, low price counts for much when it comes to securing female
car insurance and women generally favour the cheapest products (as do
men). For this reason, we have gradualy dropped several female car
insurance specialists and, indeed, dropped our last one recently.
You pay for what you get, of course, and it can be argued that going
for the cheapest female car insurance you can find is a little
self-defeating in the event of an accident or theft when some excellent
tailored products are available and could provide the type of enhanced
cover that you might need. However, market forces spoke and we
responded.
Everyone loves a bargain and, in the case of female car
insurance, this effect operates very clearly in terms of our own site
statistics.
So, for female car insurance; we now suggest using 'general' car
insurance providers for good value cover.
We do tend to find that those seeking female car
insurance are a little more likely to go direct to a top UK car insurer
such as M&S in particular. This is something we can recommend as a
good way to build in some quality contol rather than opting for a
rock-bottom price every time.
