'Buyers Guide' section that offers
the most useful advice on this.
Most teens are not
over-endowed with cash; so finding low cost car insurance
for teenagers
is important. It isn't easy, of course. Premiums tend to be high and
the cost is not helped by the young driver not having had enough years
of driving to build up their no claims bonus.
What can help to reduce the price of car insurance for teenagers? Well,
if you're living in the parental home and your car is registered in
their name, as long as you can reasonably be considered a second
driver, then it is legitimate to be a second driver on their policy
which will be considerably cheaper than a policy in your name. However,
as you'd expect, insurance companies scrutinise claims carefully where
a teenager crashes a parent's car and if, on the balance of
probabilities, they consider the teenager to be the primary driver,
they will not honour the claim; so, only do this when second driver
status is genuine and it will stand up to objective scrutiny.
One disadvantage of the above approach to car insurance for teenagers
is that it delays the day that you will commence insurance cover in
your own name which prevents you building up a no claims bonus.
In most cases, the above approach is inappropriate; so what else can be
done to reduce the price of car insurance for teenagers? Probably the
most useful strategy is to buy a car that is cheap to insure. Such a
car is smaller, older and preferably in car insurance group one.
Once you have the right car, what's next for cheap car insurance for
teenagers? Well, there are policy tweaks to consider. Push up your
Excess and you drive down your premium. Cut out some extras you don't
really need - for example a courtesy car - and your cover then includes
less and costs less. There are plenty of 'no extras' policies
available, for example from Tesco, that do this. If you really have an
old banger, you may only need third party cover, a cheaper option to
comprehensive cover.
Adopting these approaches when you fill in your quote form for car
insurance for teenagers will help but where should you go to get
quotes? For this agegroup, it really does help to use a price
comparison system in view of the high cost of cover. We can recommend
our own quote form - use the link at the top of this page.
