Direct Motor Insurance from the Car Insurance
Supermarket
In these days of
powerful aggregator, or price comparison services, can a case ever be
made for going for direct motor insurance instead?
Yes, of course. And, in our view, very much so. We believe that people
overuse price comparison sites. They are often used incorrectly in that
people focus entirely on price and ignore the car insurance
policy. The less you pay,
the less you get. Doubtless, there are many that only find out when
they have an accident how thin on cover those very low cost policies
are.
And this, in fact, leads us to the key reason why we recommend going
for direct motor insurance as the first choice option.
Quality insurance companies with a large share of the insurance market
in the UK do not compete on price alone. Direct Line, the UK's biggest
insurer, doesn't even work with price comparison sites. They do work
with us, but only as a direct motor insurance provider in
our 'direct' listings, not via our own or any of our other price
comparison systems.
When you look at the standard cover offfered by Direct Line and the
most popular direct motor insurance provider here, M&S,
it's easy to see why many still opt to go direct to get a good policy
that gives you the kind of cover you need in an accident. Very cheap
policies with a high excess and numeorus exclusions - the typical high
rankers on price comparison sites - can be a false economy.
The latter point brings us to the next, related, issue. When you go for
direct motor insurance, you can check out the
entire policy schedule in full detail easily via the insurer's own
website. All the information you need is there. When you buy via a
price comparison site, it isn't. Some price comparison sites provide
little more than the policy price. While it is easy to compare policies
on the basis of price, you can't easily compare like-for-like, if at
all. The effect of this is that the more quality cover you want, the
less useful a price comaprison site is to you.
From this, it is clear that in order to get quality cover, and to know
what you are getting, going for direct motor insurance
makes good sense. But what about the price issue? How do you know that
you are not paying too much when you go for direct motor
insurance?
Well, here's a well-kept secret. The quote forms that direct
motor insurance providers use are less detailed than the forms used by
price comparison systems. It only takes a minute or so to fill them in.
So, if you want to check two or three direct motor
insurance companies or brokers, it really is realistic and not overly
cumbersome to do so (but only via a site like this, of course, where
you can find them all in one place!). By this mechanism, you can build
in your own quality control and relax in the knowledge that you are
using a quality insurance provider with an established pedigree.
