UK Car Insurance from the Car Insurance Supermarket
Anyone who needs UK car
insurance has broadly two options. To go direct to an insurance company
or broker, or to get UK car insurance
via a price comparison service
(an aggregator). The latter is a highly popular choice while the former
is less so.
Why are price comparison services such a popular choice for people
searching for UK car insurance? The reasons, of course, are fairly
obvious. Price comparison sites are easy to use and they quickly
identify the cheapest quotes. The vast majority of people see price as
the most important determinant of their UK car insurance policy choice;
so these services give people what they want.
The problem is, however, that many people simply select the cheapest UK
car insurance identified by these services without paying attention to
the nature of the policy they have selected. Obviously, the more an
insurance company pairs down the UK car insurance cover offered by a
policy, the cheaper they can make it. You can be sure that most of them
are doing just that to compete favourably on aggregator sites. While
such policies are attractively priced, their attraction often stops
there for those that take the time to check out what they are actually
getting.
Buying UK car insurance online is not complex but it is an
oversimplification to see the only task as finding the cheapest quote.
And this, in fact, is where aggregators can let the consumer down as
they don't provide much policy information.
Does this mean that people are wrong to find their UK car insurance
cover through an aggregator site? No, but they do need to familiarise
themselves with the cover offered by consulting with relevant UK
car insurance companies direct where necessary (for example, online).
Taking account of the above quality issue, there is, in fact, something
to be said for going direct to a reputable UK car insurance company
with a well-established record of providing good cover, good customer
services and reasonable pricing.
Direct Line, the UK's biggest and most popular car insurer, doesn't
work with price comparison sites as they have decided that they wish to
offer quality cover and do not wish to compete on the basis of price
alone. Not a bad philosophy and one motorists would we wise to heed in
greater numbers.
While Direct Line is a UK favourite, and we list it here, M&S is
the most purchased direct UK car insurance policy provider here.
From the above, it can be seen that while they give people what they
want, aggregators used alone can fall short of providing their users
with a basis for making a properly informed choice; so if you use them,
be cautious, and don't always choose the cheapest quote.
There is a good rationale for going direct to a well-known UK car
insurance company when you include quality of cover as a critical
determinant of choice.
