Free Car Insurance Quotes
All car
insurance quotes are free car insurance quotes, are they not?
Well yes, but only if you don't buy a policy. When you buy a policy,
that purchase is paying for all aspects of the administration of the
policy, including the so-called free car insurance quotes.
'So what' you might say. It has to be financed, even if it's supposedly
free up-front. But, if it's not really free, in what ways might getting
these free car insurance quotes act against the interests
of the public?
Well, the key point here is where you are using an intermediary - where
some form of brokerage is going on - between you and the free
car insurance quotes provider.
In the past, when people often used car insurance brokers routinely to
get them free car insurance quotes, these
brokers were well aware of their commissions and would often present a
less competitive car insurance policy to the
consumer in order to benefit from a bigger commission.
Thankfully, the picture is different nowadays, in large part due to the
market effects of the widespread use of price comparison sites. Because
these services allow consumers to compare prices from 100s of insurance
providers, including brokers, any broker that continues to favour his
own commisions over value to the customer will quickly lose out where
competitors are not behaving similarly.
Does this mean that nowadays free car insurance quotes are
genuinely unaffected by these commerical considerations? Well, by and
large, yes, and this is good for consumers.
However, where a price comparison site is owned by a direct car
insurance provider, could there be any bias towards 'in-house' policies
in terms of the free car insurance quotes
provided by such a price comparison site to consumers? What if these
systems presented results for their own brand where the price was
altered as a result of 'a review' of competing prices to give the
in-house brand greater prominence?
While such practices, at least in theory, could ocur, if a price
comparison site developed a reputation for being uncomeptitive, it
would quickly fall out of favour with the general public. Of course in
the second scenario above, while the in-house brand would benefit, the
pricing to the consumer would remain competitive.
In practice, there is probably no need to be unduly concerned about
these factors as market forces will always drive down prices. But one
way to be sure of avoiding this is to use indendent car insurance
comparison sites (such as those listed below) to get free
car insurance quotes.
