Referral fees are a 'symptom of a sick suing culture'

That's according to Jonathan Djanogly MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Justice, in his evidence to the Transport Select Committee enquiry into the high cost of motor insurance this month in which he outlined some of the practical difficulties around operationalising a ban on referral fees in car insurance.

Car Insurance 'parasites' cost motorists £2bn

So said former Justice Secretary, Jack Straw MP of those operatives in the car insurance claims market that accept fat referral fees for passing on potential litigants to lawyers. When he gave evidence to the Transport Select Committee, Mr Straw drew attention to the correlation between numbers of injury claims following road traffic accidents and the density of claims management companies in each region.

Injury lawyers to be given access to car insurance fraudster data

The Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) has been in discussion with the personal injury lawyers representative body, the Motor Accident Solicitors Society (MASS) and other interested parties including the Association of British Insurers (ABI) with a view to providing injury lawyers with details of past claims made by their potential clients. The move will help lawyers to determine the most viable cases to represent following the introduction of the 'Jackson' reforms.

Councils have reduced road maintenance budget

We report on an RAC study of local authorities' spending on road maintenance as well as their review of the sorry state of many of our roads following repeated harsh winters. Worringly, many of the repairs that have been made have been sub-standard and therefore continue to present a hazard to road users.
